Sustainable Food Chain

FruitVegetablesEUROPE (EUCOFEL) is committed to producing socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable fruit and vegetables. To this end, we work together with our members in areas such as efficient water and waste management systems, circular economy and food waste projects, and reduction of CO2 emissions.

For us, the concept of sustainability goes beyond environmental protection to encompass social and economic aspects. A sustainable food chain is one that takes into account all tiers of the supply chain, from the farmer to the consumer.

This does not mean that one aspect is above the other; the protection of biodiversity is key to ensuring the production of high-quality fruit and vegetables. The consequences of climate change, such as droughts, floods or pests, cause severe economic losses for farmers, as well as reducing production volumes. Globally, between 2003 and 2013, according to FAO, the annual average number of disasters caused by natural hazards, including climate-related events, has almost doubled since the 1980s. The total economic damage caused is estimated at $1.5 trillion.

European fruit and vegetable producers have been working for years to improve the sustainability of their production models.

Since the 1990s, agricultural production has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 24%, as well as optimizing the use of fertilizers, with a positive impact on water quality. Besides, agriculture has been able to increase productivity by 9% since 2005.

In terms of water and energy consumption, there has also been considerable progress among farmers in the Member States. For example, Spanish farming is consuming less and less water and energy, losing less soil and emitting less gas into the atmosphere to produce one unit of product (kg, litre) or one euro of product. Furthermore, the reduction in consumption is not in line with an increase in prices, thus ensuring that all consumers, regardless of the level of income, can have access to a healthy diet.

At FruitsVegetablesEUROPE (EUCOFEL), our priority is to ensure sustainable production methods that incorporate environmental protection aspects, fair income for farmers, and accessible prices for consumers, without neglecting the high quality of our products.
